Abstract
This is a retrospective study of 50 patients with avulsion fractures of the tibial eminence and/or area intercondylaris anterior who were treated between October 1982 and June 1992. Before 1989 patients were treated after Meyers and McKeever, and thereafter the treatment was based on a modified classification. Type A fractures were more common in adults, while type B fractures were more common in children and adolescents. Type IA and noncomminuted type B fractures were successfully treated by closed methods, regardless of degree of displacement, and the displaced type IIA and IIIA and type IIIc fractures were successfully treated by surgery, with good outcomes. Therefore, based on these results conservative treatment is recommended for type IA and type B (IB, IIB, IIIB) fractures, and surgery for type IIA, IIIA and IIIc fractures.
