Abstract

The reproductive process starts with gametogenesis. In females, oogenesis involves the formation of primary oocytes from the primordial germ cells (oogonia) through mitosis. This development takes place during the fetal period and ceases at the time of giving birth. Primary oocytes divide by meiosis to form secondary oocytes prior to ovulation.
