Abstract
The macrophage plays host to Mycobacterium tuberculosis for much of the duration of its infection cycle (1, 2). And while the bacterium is not an obligate intracellular pathogen, the macrophage has undoubtedly played a dominant role in shaping the genome of M. tuberculosis.
