Stent Placement for Malignant Esophageal Obstruction

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Esophageal stenting with a self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) has increasingly been used and is currently the most common treatment modality for palliation of malignant dysphagia worldwide. Although most stents are placed in the mid- and distal esophagus, insertion in the cervical esophagus is now considered equally effective provided there is at least 2 cm distance between the proximal end of the stent and the upper esophageal sphincter. SEMS placement is also effective for palliating dysphagia caused by extraesophageal malignancies.
