Abstract

Modified DR-1 (DRS) which can covalently bind with tetraethyl orthosilicate in sol-gel media was synthesized with the reaction between 4-[ethyl(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]-4′-nitro azobenzene (DR1) and 3-isocyanatopropyl tri-ethoxy silane (SIO). From the 1H- and 13C-NMR spectra of the DRS, it proves that terminal -OH group of DR1 reacts with carbonyl group of SIO by nucleophilic addition. After poling the DRS incorporated film, the UV absorbance decreased and SHG response was obtained by using Nd:YAG laser. The thermal stability of DRS was enhanced due to the molecular incorporation of DR1 into the silica network.
