Abstract

Mental illness is one of the most serious health conditions with detrimental effects on every aspect of life. Previous studies have substantiated that mental health is largely shaped by social determinants, such as income, poverty, employment status, education, access to health care, food security, housing, neighborhoods, adverse childhood experiences, discrimination, and social exclusion. This article reviews both structural and intermediary social determinants that can impact mental health while focusing on racial differences and their implications. Lastly, this article provides practical suggestions to help improve the social determinants of mental health.
