Abstract
A superabsorbent polymer was synthesized with itaconic acid and vinyl sulfonic acid. The superabsorbent polymer was treated with various kinds of cellulose additives. The superabsorbent polymer with nanocellulose showed excellent performance. The optimal content of nanocellulose regarding water absorption properties was around 2 wt%. The characteristics of the novel itaconic acid-based superabsorbent polymer with added nanocellulose were analyzed. We confirmed the successful introduction of nanocellulose into the superabsorbent polymer by Fourier-transform infrared and X-ray diffraction analyses. The surface structure and thermal properties of the superabsorbent polymer were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis respectively. The effects of the addition and content of nanocellulose on the absorption performance of the superabsorbent polymer were studied, and the water absorption performance of the superabsorbent polymer was confirmed by measuring its centrifuge retention capacity and absorbency under load.
