Abstract
A new polyimide containing cinnamate groups was synthesized by the reaction of substituted cinnamoyl chloride with polyimide. This polyimide having cinnamate groups is aligned by linearly polarized UV light. The optical anisotropy (Δnd) reached saturation value within about 3 minutes of irradiation (about 1000 mJ/cm2). The degree of alignment (second-rank order parameters) (S) was measured with the value of about 0.6 which is the almost same value as obtained from a rubbing method. Cells fabricated using polyimide alignment layer irradiated with linearly polarized UV light showed controlled pretilt angle (α) by irradiation conditions. This polymer was applied to 5.7 inches prototype color STN LCD.
