Abstract

Buckling behavior of carbon nanotube polymer composite systems was investigated. Single walled nano tubes (SWNT)-polycarbonate composite beams with different weight fractions of SWNT fillers were used. The mechanical properties of nanocomposites were found dependent on the dispersion of carbon nanotubes within the polymer matrix. An extensometer was attached to the specimen to measure the strain during the tests. Buckling was performed by the application of a monotonically increasing compressive displacement. Results shows a significant enhancement in load transfer effectiveness between the polymer and the nanotube bundles when subjected to a compressive load.
