Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new motion vector coding scheme using decoder selectable predictive motion vector. To utilize more efficient PMV without any extra signaling data, the proposed encoder selects a predictive motion vector which can be autonomously selected by decoder among various candidate predictive motion vectors. To do so, the proposed encoder identifies decoder selectable predictive motion vector in its motion estimation process for each motion search position. Following, a search position having decoder selectable predictive motion vector the best coding performance is chosen based on rate distortion optimization criterion. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme is very effective in reducing coded motion vector data since it achieves about 3. 21% bits saving on average compared to the H. 264/AVC standard.
