Abstract

A study was performed on laser-induced surface cleaning of molybdenum field emitter arrays (FEA) for enhanced electron emission. The clear removal of ultrathin MoO oxide layers at the emitter edge through a photoinduced thermal process was shown by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. A sharp surface morphology of the emitter tips due to thermalmigration effect or crystallization during the laser exposure was also observed.
