Abstract

In this paper the effect of new tunnel construction on the lining of an existing tunnel is presented. A parametric study was conducted on a number of conditions in terms of relative location of the new tunnel to the existing tunnel using a 2D finite element model. The results indicated that the new tunnel construction imposes larger additional stresses on the lining of the existing tunnel when executed below the existing tunnel's spring line than the cases in which the new tunnel is constructed near the springline. Practical implications of the findings are discussed.
