Abstract
Photoacoustic imaging has gained attention in the field of biomedical research for its high spatial resolution with relatively deep imaging depth. Particularly, contrast-enhanced photoacoustic imaging has been widely applied in pre-clinical studies that have used various types of gold nanoparticles, including spheres, shells, rods, cages, stars, and prisms. This article explores the characteristics and key biomedical applications of representative gold nanoparticles in photoacoustic imaging. Further, with an eye to future research, it discusses the challenges faced by gold nanoparticle-based photoacoustic imaging.
