Abstract

This paper presents a novel compact electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure using a vertical double patch and a meander line (VDPM). The wideband simultaneous switching noise (SSN) in power/ground line can be efficiently suppressed using this structure. The proposed structure has two patches, one is embedded between the two ground planes for enlarging the capacitance and the other is placed on the ground layer at the same vertical axis. A meander line is used for increasing the inductance and for reducing a size of the patches. The cell size of the unit VDPM-EBG is as small as 5.6×3.6mm2. This structure using two unit cells shows good performances. Experimentally, the proposed EBG structure achieved a wideband noise suppression level of more than 25 dB at a frequency band between 1.55 and 5.83 GHz.
