Abstract

Case analyses were conducted to examine the efficiency of automatic FE-model generation for the purpose of reducing the time required to create FE-models for structural analyses. A total of 3 practical case studies were implemented with using commercial softwares. In each case, a 3D CAD model was created first, and then a FE-model was generated based on the 3D CAD model. After the FE-model was generated, a set of tasks were conducted for finalization using a commercial pre-processor. On average, approximately 30% of overall man-hour for FE-modeling was saved compared to the conventional manual FE-modeling method. Further and wider application of automation may streamline the FE-modeling procedure.
