Abstract

An increase in the size of the amyloid β-peptide (Aβ versus Aβ40) may be a key factor in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. By altering the activities of enzymes involved in the metabolism of cholesterol and sphingomyelin, an increase in the Aβ42:Aβ40 ratio may cause dysfunction and death of neurons.
