Abstract

This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a Short Pulse Width Modulation Code (SPC) transmitter for automotive applications. Although the Single Edge Nibble Transmission (SENT) protocol is a promising solution for low-cost sensors, the SPC protocol is an extended version of SENT in terms of functionality, efficiency, cost, and performance. SPC is a bidirectional protocol that provides application-specific functionalities. The simulation results show that this design fully complies with the SAEJ2716 standard. Our proposed design is implemented using the 180nm CMOS process. We synthesized our design for Xilinx and Altera FPGA boards. We achieved a maximum 625MHz operation frequency and only 62 slice registers are occupied. The proposed design was tested with the SPC SENT receiver module and 0% error was reported.
