Abstract

Statement of Purpose: The drug-eluting coronary stent (DES) has been widely utilized to overcome the problem of restenosis by controlled drug release from the polymer-coating layer.1 However, the conventional DES still induces restenosis and late thrombosis because of incomplete re-endothelialization and undesired inflammation. Notably, the inflammatory response is caused by an acidic environment resulting from byproducts of coated biodegradable polymers. To overcome the limitation, we developed a DES coated only on the abluminal side with magnesium hydroxide (MH) that can improve re-endothelialization and prevent an inflammatory reaction by neutralizing the acidic degradation products.2
